Amersham & Chiltern Colts took part in a thrilling U18s National Cup match away at Maidenhead RFC on Sunday. Scoring first from a well worked lineout Alex Koumi throwing in to Peter McAuley followed by passes from William Yarroll and Thomas Treloar to put Nick Maclauchlan through a gap to score under the posts, conversion by Ross Tobin.
Amersham & Chiltern then came under intense pressure from Maidenhead with the back row of William Curry, Edward Batchelor and (Captain) Dylan Morgan organising a concerted defensive, despite this Maidenhead found the edge to score two unconverted tries making the scores 10 – 7 to Maidenhead at half time.
The match was much more even in the second half with both teams having periods of pressure but unable to score. With pressure building Maidenhead took 3 points from a penalty with 7 minutes to go to increase their lead to 6, at which point the game opened up as Amersham & Chiltern went looking for a try.
Edward Batchelor spear headed a number of breaks into the Maidenhead half, but it was a speculative kick and bounce for Maidenhead that saw the home team extend their lead to 20 – 7. With time running out Amersham & Chiltern first won a penalty and then a line out near the Maidenhead line, Freddie Moxom throwing into Dylan Morgan enabled Amersham & Chiltern to set up an attacking maul from which William Curry was able to break and score.
